You Don't Have to Try (To Hurt Me)

about

This song has been evolving for quite awhile. It began during my last period of unemployment, 10 years ago. It started using a Triton Rack. In fact many of those sound are present here.
The mood is somewhat rocky and a little bit heavier than what I usually write, but I think it fits the message.
This final version has been bringing a lot of my musical experiences together. For instance, the vocals evolved somewhat from a memory of the way Joe Walsh used to cut the lower frequencies and add chorus or flanging to his vocal, in some James Gang songs.
The thought behind the double lead section during the 2nd chorus was the first rock band I was the way our rhythm guitarist played behind the lead, hanging on some lower slower notes, but I remember the effect.
The lead guitar was synthesized, then doubled with a live guitar.
The drums are a combination of beats EQd to avoid conflict in the lower end.
The lyrics can be interpreted on many levels, but on first listen they describe how vulnerable we are to the ones we love. How careless meaningless comments can cut to the heart.
This is also some of my first efforts at 3 part harmony.
I also have been picking up some tips and tricks to add some interest and motion to the track during the mastering phase.
I hope you enjoy the track and any comments are appreciated.

lyrics

You don't have to try
You don't have to try
You don't have to try
To hurt me

You don't have to try
You don't have to try
You don't have to try
To hurt me

I'm just in love with you,
Anything thing you want me to
Anything you want to do
I'm all yours.

The things you say to me
They're cutting me so deep
My soldiers went to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
